Introducing Roman Lore in Practice

Renee: Welcome to episode eight of Can You Believe It?

Renee: Season three of Synergy to Synastry.

Renee: Time flies.

Renee: One, because it's almost summer, who's excited?

Renee: Me.

Renee: And secondly, because we're already at the conclusion of our second culture.

Renee: This is the third and final installment of the Roman lore mini-series.

Renee: I'll be talking about Roman lore in practice.

Renee: In case you are behind, or you just somehow found this one episode, make sure to go back and listen to parts one and two, which came out over the last month, because ultimately these episodes end up referencing each other at one point or another.

Renee: Plus, it gives you the full storyline, and that is the theme of season three, lore.

Renee: Just as I did for the Greek lore and practice episode, I'll start off with discussing examples of ancient Roman divination methods, and then I'll get into the experimentation that I did over the last few weeks.

Renee: I want to start off with a quote from one of them.

Renee: It really synopsized a lot of what I have talked about in this particular miniseries.

Renee: These practices formed a vast system that merged ritual precision with political strategy, allowing the Senate and magistrates to act or refrain from acting with divine justification.

Renee: Something I've spoken about definitely in the Roman lore episode, in other words, part one, was how this culture was incredibly ritual heavy, and there was a deification of the government, the state, and authorities as well as governmental buildings and public places.

Renee: If any of you listeners out there are aware of other cultures either in the past or present, write in and share because I would love to learn about some comps.

Renee: It feels like such a specific way of operating as a culture and society.

Renee: I do know we're tiptoeing on that a little bit in the US, and that if you talk about Christian nationalism, which obviously in the Roman lore episode, I did talk about the dawn of Christianity and how that was emerging and having Rome move from a polytheistic religion to a monotheistic one.

Renee: Christian nationalism is inherently about the fusion of religion with the government and in the spirit of this quote, the ends justify the means if it was deemed so by God.

Renee: As I mentioned also with the Crusades, it just overall feel like there's a bit of a running theme here.

Renee: I would be interested to learn a little bit more and I actually did just take out, even though I'm wrapping up this series because can't help it, the bottle has opened, the genie is coming out and I'm looking to learn more.

Renee: I took this book out which I'm going to be reading over the coming weeks.

Renee: It's called Inspired by Rachel Held Evans.

Augury & Related Ancient Roman Divination Methods

Renee: When I was researching ancient Roman divination methods, there were, as expected, given the time period, given the cultural blending that I discussed with Greek lore, I did my best to find other methodologies that did not overlap or felt, in whatever way is particularly unique or relevant to this culture and at this time period.

Renee: One that came up consistently over and over and over again as a very large category is Augury, thought to be from the Latin root, avis, which means bird, guerrilla, which means to talk.

Renee: And what this divination umbrella encapsulated is following the flight of birds, whether in patterns or their general activity, chirping, tweeting, what's going on with the birds.

Renee: But I also was finding that it spoke more broadly to what was happening within the sky itself.

Renee: So I'll go into some other subtypes and corresponding mancies.

Renee: Aeromancy follows air and wind, clouds and lightning.

Renee: Safe to say that so many of us have looked up at the clouds and tried to determine, is that a shape or what do you see up there?

Renee: So to hear that there are such ancient roots is not surprising because it would make sense.

Renee: They didn't have the technology that we have, the screens that we're looking down at.

Renee: So instead, they looked up at the sky.

Renee: For patterns of the sun, planetary activity, constellations, what the clouds were up to and what the birds were up to.

Renee: The lightning piece, for whatever reason, that was tucked under aeromancy.

Renee: But then we separately, but related, have Brontomancy, thunder.

Renee: Both thunder and lightning were associated with Jupiter, aka Zeus in Greek mythology, aka Thor in Norse mythology.

Interpreting Lightning & Thunder via Divination

Renee: Lightning strikes in general could be interpreted as an endorsement of something or a warning.

Renee: There was a lot of in the eye of the beholder, or in this case diviner.

Renee: Do we think it's a good sign or it's a bad sign that there was lightning?

Renee: It could depend on the subject matter, whatever it is that the person was trying to manifest or decide or make happen, whether it was leaders, whether it was individuals.

Renee: Just speculating here, but on the positive side, maybe if they were seeking power and affirmation, then they're seeing this bolt of lightning and they're saying, oh, Jupiter is in support of this.

Renee: And then in contrast, whatever may be happening on the other side, you're doing something, you're self-doubt, or other people around you are questioning it, and then maybe they're the bearer of, well, there was lightning, so maybe Jupiter is not on board and you shouldn't continue forward with that plan.

Renee: But it gets a little bit deeper than that because they were paying attention to where the lightning strikes were happening, as well as where thunder was heard from.

Renee: I found that the interpretations were the same, so I'm just grouping them together in my explanation here.

Renee: If the lightning strikes or thunder came from the left side, that was viewed as favorable, whereas if it was from the right, it was unfavorable.

Renee: Now this piece I find fascinating because there's a lot of history research analysis on the left being associated with the negative.

Renee: Think about all of the studies, how people that were left-handed were punished for using their left hand and were forced to use their right hand.

Renee: Scissors being made for right-handed people rather than left-handed people.

Renee: There's so much history and lore here.

Renee: It does make me wonder at what point left became bad when at this point in time it appears to have been interpreted as good.

Renee: Another quick note, when thunder happened on different days of the week, it was associated with different types of people.

Renee: Thunder on a Sunday usually signaled the death of a priest or scholar.

Renee: For Mondays: women.

Renee: Wednesdays and Thursdays: beggars and prostitutes.

Renee: Would love to know the deep dive on why that is.

Renee: Because if you think back to the etymology episode that we had, where we were discussing the days of the week, I can see why Sunday makes sense for priests and scholars because that has an association with religion and rest and divine connection.

Renee: The sun and Mondays, Luna, women, sure.

Renee: Wednesdays is associated with Mercury and Thursday with Jupiter.

Renee: Seems to be a mismatch in that type of association.

Renee: For Fridays, the death of statesmen and generals.

Renee: Again, Fridays associated with Venus. This is a fun relaxing day and why do we have these government officials on it? I'm not really sure.

Renee: And thunder on Saturdays was more of a signal of general threat.

Renee: It could be dun, dun, dun, something bad is going to happen.

Renee: Really, really big and large scale, such as a plague or famine.

Renee: I also have no idea why Tuesday was left out of this, but apparently thunder is okay on Tuesdays and maybe no one's going to die.

Oneiromancy

Renee: Moving on to another mancy and totally different category of Roman divination.

Renee: This next one, we've already talked about multiple times on this podcast, but I never looked up nor knew the mancy for it, and I finally found it while doing research on Roman lore, which is really exciting.

Renee: Oneiromancy, which comes from the Greek, aniro meaning dream.

Renee: So if you are doing any sort of dream interpretation, as we have done multiple times in this podcast and all season long in season two doing dream analysis, that means that you are engaging in or practicing Oneiromancy.

Renee: I do wonder if they have any records of different Roman dreams.

Renee: Like just think about that.

Renee: We know what we dream about now, and oftentimes it's a representative of what's happening currently in our lives.

Renee: Sometimes it's more fantastical scenarios, but we also have TV, movies and culture and things that are supernatural and CGI.

Renee: So if they don't have any of that input, you do wonder what they might have been dreaming about.

Oomancy

Renee: Next up, we have oomancy, which comes from the Greek oan meaning egg.

Renee: This is a practice where an egg white was dropped into boiling water and people would make predictions from the shapes that were formed.

Renee: For example, a nice circular mass indicated that a wedding was on the way, but one that was irregularly shaped in snake-like was viewed as a warning or signal of imminent danger.

Renee: Also, eggs that were unbroken were rubbed on the stomachs of pregnant women and then cracked open as part of learning about that pregnancy or future child.

Renee: It just makes me think of those other practices where people are dangling a pendulum over the stomach to try to see what the sex is or we're rewatching Peaky Blinders and Polly in one scene and it just goes up and just touches one of the other characters' ribs above but partially overlapping with her stomach and was able to intuit that she was pregnant and also did tea leaf reading, tasseomancy.

Renee: It would not surprise me that there are dozens and dozens of egg pun intended, dozens and dozens of practices linked to understanding pregnancy, predicting pregnancy outcomes.

Renee: Also for example, is the woman going to live or not because the mortality rate was so much higher.

Renee: But there is something pretty symbolically aligned about having an egg and using that as a tool to understand the pregnancy of a woman when obviously it's egg fertilization, it is representing a birth process.

Egg Cleansing & Limpia con Huevo

Renee: And I had to mention here, while I was researching, I came across something I had completely missed, egg cleansing.

Renee: Apparently this was a trend online in 2024 through 2025, inspired by limpia con huevo, which is a Mexican ceremony.

Renee: There was a lot of kind of angry discourse about this online.

Renee: If people doing this egg cleansing, which isn't exactly what that ceremony is, but it was being modified, appropriated, and then used for something, and then people were mad about it.

Renee: People would roll an egg around their entire body, have an intention that they were setting.

Renee: You're rolling it everywhere, and it's as if the egg is absorbing the negative energy.

Renee: Then what you do after you've rolled it everywhere, is crack it to release it.

Renee: I don't know if you then cook the egg or eat the egg, or you just throw it out, or what you're doing with this.

Renee: But to me, there are so many other practices that really get at this same idea.

Renee: Something that we were taught in the Nuurvana program is the Golden Sun, auric fields, grounding cords.

Renee: There's a lot of visualization that people can do.

Renee: I've also heard it very commonly.

Renee: Someone's showering, they're visualizing to accompany the literal physical thing that is happening to them.

Renee: Same thing with a bath, that you're washing the negativity away, it's coming out of your pores, and then it's going to go down the drain.

Renee: Whether it's fully within your mind in a visualization practice or something hybrid, like this egg cleansing or any of the water works, there's a lot of ways to get at this idea.

Renee: I don't think my first thought would be to reach for an egg and roll it around and then crack it, and then I don't know, do what with it.

Mirror Scrying

Renee: The final divination method I'm going to chat about today is scrying.

Renee: We have mentioned this one before.

Renee: If you recall in season two, Christine and I had, as I'm doing today, selected some different divination methods that we had not tested before.

Renee: And I did water scrying, AKA hydromancy.

Renee: It's similar to augury in that it's a bit of a category and there's a few different subtypes.

Renee: Scryers were considered seers who looked into a mirror, water, a crystal ball, or any other reflective surface in order to divine insights, receive guidance, etc.

Renee: Specifically in ancient Rome, these scryers were called speculari from the Latin root speculum, meaning mirror.

Renee: Taking that a little bit deeper, you have spec, which means to observe, an ari that indicates a profession, one who uses.

Renee: Therefore speculari means one who uses observance or vision.

Revealing Which Divination Methods Renee Chose!

Renee: In the Greek lore mini-series, I had chosen divination practices from the modernity episode.

Renee: But this go-around, I did choose two practices from the list I just shared.

Renee: If you would like to take the opportunity to use your intuition to make your prediction or channel, feel free to take a few moments to do that now.

Renee: If you'd like to pause, you can.

Renee: And if you also want to throw in the comments what your predictions were and or if you got them right, great learning opportunity.

Renee: All right, so what did I choose?

Renee: First one, Oomancy.

Renee: I'm gonna outline what I did with the old egg.

Renee: I will include some pictures that I took during the process.

Renee: Feel free to pull that up on my social media if you would like to look at the egg in question while I am describing it, as well as my experience.

Renee: So I'm gonna start with the latter.

Experimenting with Oomancy

Renee: The instructions that I had read, because I wasn't gonna do the boiling water.

Renee: I saw you didn't necessarily have to do that.

Renee: I didn't feel like doing that.

Renee: I really wanted to get a full 360 view.

Renee: I didn't want it to go by too fast.

Renee: For my intention setting, I held the egg in the palm of my hands, closed my eyes, did some breathing visualization, as if it was filling with light, connected through to me and my higher self, and asked my guys what my intention should be, because I actually hadn't thought that far ahead when I decided to do this.

Renee: So I was like, what should my intention be?

Renee: What came through was the phrase love line, not to be confused with love life.

Renee: When I inquired what this meant, the explanation was it was about the trajectory and not about specific people, more of the high level journey in trying to understand that and gain some insight.

Renee: Other language that came through and part of what I then was adding on to that intention question, a love that makes me feel at rest.

Renee: All right, so this is what happened.

Renee: I hit my egg on the table, created a nice little circle.

Renee: I went to go crack it and it kind of exploded out and I went, oh no, I don't know if I wasn't fully holding it over the glass right or just how it was cracked.

Renee: The whites shot out over the glass and kind of dripped down onto the tables afterwards.

Renee: I was cleaning it up.

Renee: I was so caught off guard by making a slight mess, I didn't watch the egg yolk falling in or anything falling in.

Renee: I was just like, oh no.

Renee: Well, I guess I just got to keep going and also maybe that's symbolic in some way.

Renee: There was a small bubble blob piece that was sticking out from the side and the longer it was sitting there, it started to spread a little bit more, but otherwise it was relatively contained.

Renee: I also noticed right away that there was a very, very tiny piece of shell in that side blob, a few little bubbles.

Renee: Some were floating in the water and others were hovering right around or on top of the yoke, and they almost look like little pearls.

Renee: It's something reflective inside, something reflective inside, something reflective.

Renee: There was this almost metallic quality which was really interesting.

Renee: What was happening with the egg whites is that most of it was at the bottom, some of it, as we know, was outside dripping down the side of the glass, but there were also what I'll describe as tendrils, remnants of, I think, maybe five different lines and swirls.

Renee: Some went partway down, while others traced from the top of the water surface all the way down to connect with the yoke at the bottom.

Renee: It was at this point when I captured the initial visual and got over the egg disaster breaking that I started to channel.

Renee: What came through was this feeling of suspension.

Renee: My observation of those bubbles hovering, but staying in place.

Renee: There's a few that are scattered throughout, and they were representing the wholeness and moments of space and the perfection of having those opportunities to really reflect, go inward and have like sacred pauses.

Renee: The five tendrils that were hanging, three of them reached from the top all the way to the bottom, and two went about halfway.

Renee: My brain immediately thought maybe this has to do with number of relationships, but that instantly felt inaccurate.

Renee: I was drawn to one of the line blobs halfway down in particular, and that did feel like it was tied to my most recent long-term relationship.

Renee: Some of the lines are representing me and my personal continuity, and the shoulder lines are disruptors.

Renee: Looking from the aerial view at the top of the glass, those lines that look like they're going basically straight down were swirling on the top, so there was more dimension to them.

Renee: It's like those optical illusions, you look at it from the side versus this other side, and it makes a face, and now all of a sudden it makes a square.

Renee: They were actually most concentrated towards the center, and I was starting to question how much of what I was seeing had to do with my poor egg cracking, and I had my guides jumping in like, stop fixating on that, don't worry about it, don't dwell on it.

Renee: One of the key lessons for me to learn in this lifetime is to not have my mind get away from me, and specifically in this situation, not to fantasize.

Renee: When we're talking about love and relationships, that is more likely the case, thinking of the best case scenario versus the worst case scenario, but it could be a combination of the both.

Renee: And when this information came in, I was like, okay, I do kind of recognize why some of this might be coming up because what I've been learning over the last many years, and especially as I have been developing my intuition, I have never been wrong about how a date is gonna go, whether somebody is a worthwhile connection or not, even knowing when I have really no reason, it's not like they've said this or done that.

Renee: All of a sudden, this information drops in and it's very specific, and then that's what happens.

Renee: The thing that quote goes wrong or becomes a roadblock or deal breaker on either end.

Renee: If you are fixated on fantasy of hope, wanting certain things to work, then you shut down that intuition.

Renee: You don't listen to it.

Renee: You start overthinking because you think you're overthinking.

Renee: You diminish the potency of those messages.

Renee: What's most important is to be present with that person, but also to be even more present with yourself.

Renee: And that is what's suggested by those full through lines.

Renee: We, in our experience of self, must be the constant.

Renee: That halfway line I was referencing before, I was not connected to myself increasingly, which is why I had to get out of the relationship because I didn't like the traits that were being activated by the relationship.

Renee: And I felt so much freer and more open to speak and communicate and take up space when I was able to get out of that and come back.

Renee: I pretty much took two months off from online dating, as per Aphrodite's suggestion, in my last Practices episode.

Renee: I've grown so much, even in just these few months that I took off.

Renee: Recognizing how I need to set up my values, my lifestyle, what works for me, what does not work for me.

Renee: There's a difference between being agreeable and self-sacrificing.

Renee: And I think that was the lesson that I was having trouble sticking the landing on from that relationship and I get it now.

Renee: All right, next part of the Eggie.

Renee: I turned over to my napkin.

Renee: I said, hey, how you doing over there?

Renee: Shell.

Renee: The egg shell was pretty much broken directly in half.

Renee: The left side of the egg shell had a lot of cracks in it, many, many ridges and deformities, if you will.

Renee: But the second half was pretty much smooth, as if nothing happened.

Renee: And the message that came through when I was channeling on the egg shell is that that left-hand portion is the rockier, more fragmented trajectory of the love line.

Renee: And the second half, while it has a little bit of the indentation from that cracking fissure pressure point, it's mostly smooth.

Renee: So this felt like a nice reassurance that this first half, this first leg, which is the cracking, the learning, the you have to break a couple of legs to make an omelet, and then the second half being more, like I spoke about before, the continuity.

Renee: And overall thoughts on this experience.

Renee: It was very quick and easy.

Renee: I really was concerned that I had messed it up when I felt like I didn't crack the egg cleanly, but the messages came through very clearly.

Renee: I didn't have to do any sort of forced Q&A, like asking questions.

Renee: It just was, okay, let me look at what's happening with the egg here.

Renee: Boom, a bunch of stuff just flew in.

Renee: I had my loose instructions.

Renee: I kind of followed it.

Renee: I chose where to go rogue, and it didn't have to be perfect for me to still get information on something that honestly I was not sitting around and thinking about nor trying to intuit into at all.

Renee: So it ended up being a really great topic.

Renee: I only more recently got back on apps, but I had done this exercise probably a couple weeks prior.

Experimenting with Mirror Scrying

Renee: For my second experiment, I chose scrying.

Renee: And of course, I wasn't gonna do a repeat, couldn't do Hydromancy again.

Renee: I did think about it, I'll be honest.

Renee: I thought about it, I channeled on it, and if anyone remembers from the last time, it came through very, very strongly that it's something that's ancestrally very sacred, and I should only be using it for very specific circumstances, and I will know when is the next time that is appropriate.

Renee: So what I decided to do was a completely different angle, mirror scrying.

Renee: They do make scrying mirrors, and you can also make your own painting, a mirror, the back of a mirror, and then putting it back in the frame and all this other stuff.

Renee: Of course, I didn't have that, and I was not going to be making it two minutes before doing this, and then never being to use it again.

Renee: So instead, I found a nice hack, which was a powder room or bathroom downstairs.

Renee: It's small, it has a huge mirror.

Renee: So I just went in there and closed the door so it was pitch black.

Renee: I guess I probably should have also done the dictation, but that didn't for whatever reason cross my mind, maybe because I did these on different days.

Renee: But I brought a notebook in with me, so I was writing slash drawing in the dark while doing this exercise, because of course that didn't make any sense, but I didn't realize that until I'm recording right now, there was a better way.

Renee: Trying to take some deep breaths, look forward, not at myself, but I was kind of just looking out ahead of me, slightly down a little bit into the darkness, have my eyes go a bit out of focus.

Renee: And what instantly started happening, rolly-dottie-ball thing, I don't even know how to describe it, but it was something I used to see when I was younger.

Renee: I did actually bring it up to my mom and doctor.

Renee: I don't know why I keep seeing this thing.

Renee: And of course, jokes on me, because it probably was relating to my intuition, I just didn't understand at the time, but I thought it was weird, because sometimes I would see before I went to bed, so I'm lying there trying to sleep, and I just kept seeing this thing spinning.

Renee: For anyone that has trypophobia, it kind of is like that, where I was like, I don't even want to look at this, it looks gross, like it kind of bothered me, but I couldn't stop seeing it, and it was just spinning and swirling, and sometimes it was changing colors, and it kept happening whether my eyes were open or closed.

Renee: In fact, sometimes if my eyes were closed, it would spread and get a little bit bigger, and I kept just trying to clear my mind, like I don't want to see this.

Renee: So that was the first thing that I saw, and I was like, great, here's my little ball thing.

Renee: There was a stretch of time where I saw it a lot, probably middle school, high school, but I kind of forget it's a thing.

Renee: So that popped up, but then it kind of went away, and I just had the question, where are you?

Renee: I didn't even process what I was doing until I went back and I analyzed my notes and drawings, but right next to it, I drew a picture of a house.

Renee: And of course, I was at home.

Renee: Scrolling does put you in this weird, just slightly off, ahead space, and the vibe is very different.

Renee: So I would not recommend it to everybody.

Renee: I think the last time it was maybe 10, 15 minutes.

Renee: This time was probably  or less minutes that I was doing this.

Renee: The next thing that came in was the word freeze.

Renee: Wake up on cork.

Renee: I started seeing a river.

Renee: So I just drew, it almost looks like the Aquarius symbol.

Renee: A quote came through, stop asking for order.

Renee: Free in all caps, underlined.

Renee: And then I was getting guided to do a series of drawing.

Renee: So all this is a pretty quick sequence.

Renee: Squiggle ball and then right next to it, it was a bunch of balls next to each other.

Renee: Series of horizontal lines.

Renee: Chaos becoming order, but as I said, stop asking for order.

Renee: Almost as if the alignment is going to happen by itself.

Renee: All caps underlined, drop the ball.

Renee: Basically getting messier.

Renee: So I'm having a bit of a juxtaposition here.

Renee: Seeing the visuals of messiness becoming order, but discussions around waking up, uncorking, what happens when you uncork, things can spill, things get unlocked.

Renee: The freedom, the opening.

Renee: So there was a lot of symbolism and even the river, it's like the flowing going from one stage to the next.

Renee: So once I wrote The Get Messy Now, I instantly had that feeling of this is done, which does happen to me most of the time when I'm doing things for people.

Renee: I just had the sensation of, okay, that was it, we're done here.

Renee: I went back out, sat at the kitchen table.

Renee: I'm laughing because I'm seeing where everything landed up on the page.

Renee: I numbered them to know what the sequence was for each of the messages and symbols.

Renee: I did some narration on it to explain how the information came through just to document the experience more as well as channeling off of interpretations of it.

Renee: Other notes I wrote down that I haven't already explained.

Renee: When the message about stop asking for order came through, what I had been doing at the time was I kept repeating the question of like, what do I need to know?

Renee: What do I need to know?

Renee: Which is kind of a thing I usually do in my readings.

Renee: What does so and so need to know?

Renee: What do I need to know?

Renee: Because I was going with a blank slate, I didn't have any sort of an intention.

Renee: I'm just walking into this dark room like, okay, what do I need to know?

Renee: I just got this clap back of stop asking, stop asking for order, stop asking for a specific path for clarity for the next steps, what to do, coupled with being free.

Renee: This turn from one into the other feels like the major theme shift.

Renee: In some years past, it was a stretch of time where all my psychic friends kept getting messages for me when we were doing our round robins and reading each other about me letting my hair down and dancing and letting loose more and relinquishing and releasing control and leaning in to play more.

Renee: And I know I have worked on that and I have improved in that space, but clearly I haven't uncorked enough.

Renee: As a thought exercise for myself, what could I do to be messier?

Renee: Number one, not literally.

Renee: I feel like my room is too messy.

Renee: I have compiled things.

Renee: I want to clean it up and I'll do it in phases and then it gets filled in with something else.

Renee: So it's not about literal mess.

Renee: What's coming in now is psychological mess, but like not in the way, not in the way that's like unhealthy, but as I've talked about several times in this podcast, the beginning of  felt like it was very psychologically messy and to be okay with maybe not behaving or speaking or communicating in a way that I would normally with a sound head because I was emotionally triggered and stressed and exhausted.

Renee: That was okay to do that and it doesn't mean that I operate on that all the time.

Renee: I was very cognizant of wanting to maintain integrity and honesty and trying to be compassionate.

Renee: I just felt like I was battling with myself of like, but I just feel like I'm on fire right now.

Renee: So what really is at the core of that discomfort?

Renee: And while it feels counterproductive, the message really is to be and embody a quote, lack of clarity with my business, with the podcast, with my full-time job.

Renee: Really all of them are about providing clarity, instruction, support, guidance, structure for other people.

Renee: Another question for myself, what are ways that I could live out lack of clarity?

Renee: And being able to share that too, which I think I've been doing on this season in sharing different things I've been struggling with or thinking about, being okay with not exactly knowing what's coming next or what to do next and just think about the present, how I am and how I'm treating myself, how I'm connected and getting myself more at rest.

Renee: I guess I have more things to think about and reflect on.
