Introducing Roman Lore in Modernity

Renee: Hey, listener!

Renee: Welcome to part two of the Roman Lore miniseries.

Renee: We're gonna be talking about Roman Lore in modernity.

Renee: If you haven't already listened to part one, make sure to do so now.

Renee: I want to make the careful distinction here, because as we did in the Greek modernity episode, I shared pop culture references and how we are seeing the tales of ancient Greece and how they have been translated, woven into present day culture.

Renee: When I sat down to do the same research for Roman Lore, I found it to be very difficult because of the overlap that I spoke about in the last episode.

Renee: Really the number one thing that comes up is gladiators, different wars and battles.

Renee: You tend to lose the gods and goddesses that we consistently associate with Greek lore even though they were very much present through many centuries of Roman Lore.

Renee: For this many series, I jumped a bit over that section because I didn't want it to be redundant.

Renee: I was talking about lore preceding and following that especially overlapping era.

Renee: And that being said, I still had to find something comparable story-wise that didn't just feel like super one note because honestly, I think we have a very, very limited perception of what these hundreds of years and this incredibly significant empire, which again, wasn't even really the focus of this series, I wanted to start the conversation for this episode there because as with all lore, it's nuanced, there are certain people who are choosing to write it, they're choosing what stories to tell, and then there's decisions made along the way of what gets reprinted, what gets edited, what gets published, what gets taught.

Renee: And so we're looking through hundreds, thousands of years worth of filters on these time periods, and that has flattened what was actually happening.

Renee: Hopefully throughout this whole series, you're getting a bit of that understanding.

Renee: Again, this is just my take from, specifically for this podcast, doing these studies on it.

Roman Lore in Pop Culture

Renee: I mentioned before that a lot of the stories we talk about in present day are about the Roman Empire, meaning Julius Caesar, gladiator.

Renee: There are countless books, movies, stories, some other famous ones, Monty Python's Life of Brian, Ben Hur, Cleopatra starring Elizabeth Taylor, and then more recently, the TV show Rome.

Renee: Those pieces of lore have been told and retold, but I was able to find other pop culture references, vernacular that is used in reference to and about this time.

Renee: First one, a very famous proverb, Rome Wasn't Built in a Day.

Renee: I had to look into this one.

Renee: Its origin is a French proverb from the th century, much later than we were looking at.

Renee: Of course, there is a series of lore about how exactly Rome was built and founded, and I read about some of that in preparation for this mini series, but I didn't end up going into it because I found some other stories a little bit more compelling, no offense, Romulus.

Renee: The first English documentation was in the 16th century, so much, much more modern.

Renee: But it is showing how this ancient city, which had its own lore for its founding, somehow penetrated enough of people's psyches and stories, even without the story in itself.

Renee: The proverb isn't telling us how Rome was built.

Renee: But for whatever reason, this wording has lasted for centuries and centuries and centuries.

Renee: These cases were physically documented, but it doesn't mean and does in fact suggest that people were already using them in some fashion before and or in between at the minimum.

My Roman Empire

Renee: Another story that I had to bring up, does anybody remember this?

Renee: Because I was laughing when I was poking around, I was like, oh my gosh, this really has infused so much into culture that I actually had to research some of the history because I forgot it.

Renee: Fall 2024, the beginning of this social media trend where women were asking men how often they think about the Roman Empire.

Renee: And the running joke was there were so many men who were saying all the time and they were expressing their fascination with it.

Renee: Women and just public at large was realizing, wait, why is this so significant?

Renee: Especially given what I was saying before, that we only have so many stories that have lasted that are generally understood by the public.

Renee: Because of course, there's a lot more documented by these historians, but the average person is not sitting around reading them nor discussing them.

Renee: So why is it that there is this fascination and there was a lot of discourse now nearly three years ago of people trying to get to the bottom of this?

Renee: And something that has come out of that experience is people using the phrase My Roman Empire, some other completely obscure event or book or something living completely rent-free in someone's head, or even part of their origin story or shaping them fundamentally as a person.

Renee: That phrase and meme is something that has evolved over the last three years.

Renee: As I mentioned at the end of part one, the spread of Christianity that was directly tied to the Roman Empire and the emperor that was in charge at the time, and how that has massively changed the course of history.

Renee: With these two terms and phrases, they are signaling that there is a significance to this era, but there's also a hollowness in that we're not actually talking about and understanding why.

Roman Lore in Fictional Characters

Renee: I'm gonna rattle off some other quick pop culture references that I was able to find or just knew off the top of my head.

Renee: Juno, the movie starring Elliot Page.

Renee: Juno is the Roman name for Hera in Greek mythology, who is the mother.

Renee: So when you're having this story of a teenage girl becoming pregnant, she is the mother.

Renee: Minerva is the Roman name for Athena, Minerva McGonagal.

Renee: She is a charms teacher.

Renee: She is very smart.

Renee: She's intellectual.

Renee: I've mentioned this in, I think a season  episode somewhere, one of the bloopers.

Renee: I was telling Christine about the song Venus by Lady Gaga off of her Artpop album.

Renee: There is a bridge in the song where Gaga is going through and listing all of the planets off.

Renee: The entire song, she's using Venus and Aphrodite interchangeably.

Renee: And those are the Roman and Greek names for that goddess respectively.

Renee: Plus, the imagery on the cover of that album is Venus inspired.

Renee: Another character from Roman Lore that has very much lasted is talked about every single year around Valentine's Day, we have Cupid.

Renee: This is an iconic figure.

Renee: In Roman Lore, Cupid is not the little cherub that we tend to see.

Renee: So that was an evolution that happened over time.

Renee: In Greek Lore, Cupid is known as Eros, which you do sometimes here.

Renee: But really Cupid is the more popular name.

Renee: So I think this is honestly one of the few instances by and large where the Roman Lore beat out the Greek Lore.

Renee: Some references of Cupid's story.

Renee: The book Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis, which shares the Roman Lore story of Cupid and Psyche.

Renee: Psyche is also the Greek name.

Renee: It's one of those classic stories where she's not supposed to look at him.

Renee: The God tells you, don't do this.

Renee: I spoke about this in the Greek Lore episode.

Renee: They're happy together.

Renee: They're in love, but the lights are always off.

Renee: And then one day, her girlfriends or something at home are like, so you've never seen this guy?

Renee: He's sleeping.

Renee: And she turns the light on to look at him.

Renee: And of course, he is beautiful, but she wasn't supposed to look at him.

Renee: And so then, you know, you get punished.

Renee: And that's what always happens in these stories.

Renee: This storyline was turned into the mid th century French story, now a second through line, stories from ancient Rome and Greece, then being discussed in France, turned into English content many centuries afterwards.

Renee: Forgive my French because I don't speak French.

Renee: Le Belle et le Bête.

Renee: That was the original text, which was later rewritten and of course Disney-ified as Beauty and the Beast.

Renee: That all stems back to this lore.

Vesta Placement in Astrology

Renee: In the last episode, I shared the story of the goddess of the hearth, Vesta.

Renee: I was not familiar with her at all before researching for part one, but I knew her name in passing because I've seen it around in astrology.

Renee: And I was really, really excited when I saw her pop up because I was like, this is great, this is an opportunity for me to research this because it's been on my radar to look into asteroids in astrology, other than Chiron, which I jumped into pretty quickly in my studies.

Renee: And I've consistently used Chiron in my readings and teachings ever since I started my business.

Renee: The reason that I'm bringing up Vesta in this modernity episode is because the only reason Vesta, this goddess, is present in astrology is because it took until 1807 before this name was repurposed.

Renee: Whoever was on that team discovering this asteroid, they chose to name it Vesta.

Renee: And then it was observed and it was studied in connecting it with astrology and seeing how signatures were present for people and folded into chart interpretation.

Renee: This dwarf planet is located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Renee: I love this quote.

Renee: Vesta is your quiet promise.

Renee: It shows the space in your life where you stay loyal without needing praise.

Renee: You can view Vesta as an inner sanctuary, a spiritual flame, remember it's the hearth, and representing personal rituals.

Renee: If you're in alignment with your Vesta placement, you're following your purpose.

Renee: In other words, your spiritual oath.

Renee: What is my grander purpose in life?

Renee: There's a lot of other placements that we can look at for that type of interpretation.

Renee: For Vesta, it's about the oath that you have taken to your spirit, to your soul, to that fire, that flame within you.

Renee: Your Vesta placement also indicates how comfortable you are with being alone and what it is that we need to recharge.

Renee: Vesta's energy influences your routines, emotions, relationships, boundaries, and how you protect your energy.

Renee: In understanding your Vesta sign, house, and any planetary aspects to it, you can see why certain areas of life feel more calming, purposeful, draining, or sacred.

Renee: And as I mentioned before, if we are living in alignment with that natal placement, we are, as the Vestals had, feeding that flame and keeping the hearth full.

Renee: It's really a fancy way of saying self-care meets purpose.

Renee: And when we are choosing to keep that flame lit, we are supporting our longevity and our connection and alignment for the rest of our lives.

Finding Vesta in Your Natal Chart

Renee: If you would like to find your natal Vesta placement, I recommend going to astro-seek.com.

Renee: I'll put a link in the show notes for their natal chart page.

Renee: And what you'll want to do is after you put in your birth details, meaning the date of birth, the time, or an approximation.

Renee: Note, if you say time unknown, then you're going to miss key details.

Renee: So if you don't know, do 12 noon.

Renee: Or if you have an estimate, I think I was born in the morning, pick a random time.

Renee: If you select nothing, you're not going to get the life areas or houses, which I am going to be going over in this interpretation.

Renee: There will be a sub or extended settings view, something like that.

Renee: And you'll want to select from the asteroid section, Vesta, and check that box.

Renee: If you look at your chart, you're like, I can't tell which symbol it is.

Renee: There's a panel that will label it and it will say Vesta, and it will tell you which degree point, which sign.

Renee: And then you determine the house by seeing where it lines up within the pie chart, aka the natal chart.

Interpreting Vesta: 7th House in Cancer

Renee: I'm going to go over interpretations for Christine and then myself, for our Vesta natal chart placement.

Renee: If you would like to do the same for yourself, and it's not one of the combos that we have, you can click on the corresponding links in the episode descriptions to find some resources that I used and just scroll to find, like let's say yours is in Taurus in the Eighth House.

Renee: Go to the articles, find some examples for Taurus, and then find some examples for Eighth House, combine those together, and then that will give you your interpretation.

Renee: If you have any planetary activations, meaning conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition, those require separate research.

Renee: This was really fun and fascinating for me to look into.

Renee: So I'm happy to give you a little assist.

Renee: Starting off with Christine, her natal Vesta is in cancer in her seventh house.

Renee: A Vesta in Cancer placement signals someone who is nurturing, comfort seeking and family and home oriented.

Renee: In other words, they need personal space and emotional safety.

Renee: You love quiet nights at home with your family, or just spending time in your room.

Renee: Think about how good it feels when you're wrapped up in a blanket watching your favorite show.

Renee: I love this, I was like, I like that too.

Renee: But it's just because cancer rising.

Renee: Even though I have cancer energy in my chart, there is a very distinct quality here and this is why natal placements matter.

Renee: So having a Vesta in Cancer means that you need that personal space, you need the emotional safety, connection to family, connection to the literal home.

Renee: When you are doing that caretaking, having the hard shell, the self-comfort, if you will, those become essential, allowing you to tend that flame every day.

Renee: And on the opposite side, these individuals have a risk of overextending for others or overly burrowing and hiding.

Renee: You can go on either extreme of like, well, I love the peace and quiet and I'm being at home and being away from this and that and the other thing, I'm just going to go underground.

Renee: That is not a healthy alignment for Vesta in the same way that doing too much nurturing of other people rather than yourself is a misalignment.

Renee: When we fold in the seventh house, that is the house of committed partnerships, romantic and business.

Renee: This means that connection and human support are essential for spiritual grounding.

Renee: Relationship dynamics are incredibly important, and having the balance there.

Renee: Someone with Vesta and cancer needs human connection and the feeling of commitment and that those people are going to be there for them, but they also need to still nurture themselves independent of people or make sure that those individuals are nurturing them, and there's this feeling with them of home.

Renee: The risk factor for Vesta in the Seventh House is blurring lines between the self and any partners, such as over-sacrificing, which leads to resentments doing over time.

Renee: Other risk is fixating on the fear of being alone.

Renee: Christine had no planetary aspects with her Vesta placement, so that would be where it ends for her interpretation.

Interpreting Vesta: 10th House in Aries

Renee: I have Vesta in Aries, where I already have my son, my MC, and my Venus.

Renee: I didn't realize I had this much fire energy.

Renee: I thought it was limited to just those couple things.

Renee: Ultimately, a Vesta in Aries signals someone who is brave, bold, pioneering, and is devoted to independence.

Renee: You might feel excited starting a project alone, like building something or planning an adventure.

Renee: It feels good because you trust yourself.

Renee: All this made me think of is when you have a group project.

Renee: I'm always that person where I don't want these other people to be messing this thing up.

Renee: I want to get that good grade.

Renee: I want this to be done well.

Renee: Some of that's a Virgo tendency.

Renee: But even when I was younger and quieter in school, and I didn't really want to speak up, if we were tucked aside for a small group, you know I was talking.

Renee: I still do this.

Renee: If I am in a setting and it doesn't feel like somebody's taking charge, I'm going to step up.

Renee: Okay, so what are we doing here?

Renee: Get the conversation going, get everybody on the same page, get the ball moving.

Renee: Because it makes me feel, according to Vesta, it feels wrong to not be taking the pioneering action by not having something going and moving.

Renee: The risk factors for Vesta and Aries include self-fulfillment that keeps you alone.

Renee: In other words, well, I can just do this by myself.

Renee: Better if I just handle it.

Renee: That becomes the trap because then you're not connected to other people.

Renee: Based on the rest of my chart in astrology and what I have received messages about in psychic readings and just my personal experiences, what feels good, what feels connected is that I am linked to other people.

Renee: I can start the fire and I can keep the flame burning alone.

Renee: I can totally be an independent worker.

Renee: I can get it there from start to finish.

Renee: I can do it all the time with my business.

Renee: However, my purpose is tied to other people.

Renee: There needs to either be a feedback loop or asking for help, staying connected to the outcome as being linked to others outside of myself.

Renee: And I should be surprised to know one, another risk factor is being impulsive, impatient or self-sacrificing with or for the work, a.k.a.

Renee: burnout.

Renee: I also have this in my chart in so many places, risk of burnout, risk of burnout and your girl is always battling burnout.

Renee: And it's because when you have that fire, you're eager to start something, you're eager to do this, do that, do this other thing, there's a sense of ambition.

Renee: But then all of a sudden, you don't just have one big fire, you have a bunch of fires everywhere.

Renee: And then you're trying to keep all of them lit.

Renee: It ends up meaning that you exert a lot of different energy and then you start flaming out.

Renee: And that's not all, because I have to talk about where this is happening.

Renee: The th house is about a commitment to big goals, ambitions and legacy.

Renee: th house is career and reputation.

Renee: I'm not just gonna pick any career path.

Renee: It is essential for it to be meaningful and feel aligned with a higher calling and aligned with my values and a sense of integrity.

Renee: Because it's about reputation, it means that Vesta wants to be known for having and standing on principles.

Renee: These individuals need to be authentic and to follow their passions.

Renee: They also can be late bloomers with success.

Renee: So the lesson is just stay committed, just keep going.

Renee: Keep that fire lit, keep adding to it, keep trying, keep experimenting, keep pioneering, because eventually it's going to pan out.

Renee: I've had to change and pivot.

Renee: What is my long term?

Renee: What is my career purpose?

Renee: What is my passion?

Renee: It's never that I fully started over.

Renee: It just recalibrates and recalibrates and recalibrates.

Renee: And I have been learning more and more to follow my passions, inspired action, not get mad at myself, because suddenly I'm interested in this.

Renee: Maybe it's my intuition telling me, look at this, look over here.

Renee: I had to be willing to start new things.

Renee: I had to be willing to keep going, keep pushing, but not to push myself to the brink and not to only do things alone.

Renee: And this is also reflected in the Tenth House Risk Factors, because we have also risk of burnout.

Renee: For the Tenth House, it's due to sacrificing a lone time, meaning if you're always committed to the cause, you're always needing to complete that goal, constant pursuit of that vision.

Renee: This is a totally separate interpretation, but you can see how it intersects because Aries is an individual and is okay working alone.

Renee: Both of these are complimentary.

Renee: In the same way that I felt that Christine's was, where she had a thread of the relationships, but there was a certain tenderness and tie, and I have just fire.

Renee: It's a commitment through ambition and pursuit.

Renee: There's this little reminder in the back saying, hey, make sure not to do everything by yourself.

Renee: Make sure to take a break, recharge, release that stress, and that's because the main stress dynamic is caused by the discrepancy or conflict between perception and dedication.

Renee: Well, if I stop working hard, whatever you think working hard is, what are people going to think of me?

Renee: What am I going to think of myself?

Renee: What does that mean about me?

Renee: That really rings true.

Renee: I have those conversations with myself all the time because you have to remind yourself, no one's watching and yet you're so stuck on the principles.

Renee: That's the th house integrity.

Renee: I have to be this way because this is so important to me that I need to live this way.

Renee: I need to align with this vision, this path, and even if no one else is paying attention, it becomes so important.

Renee: Great.

Renee: I have this double risk of burnout.

Renee: How wonderful, but there's still hope.

Renee: I actually have a silver lining here, which is I have Vesta conjunct my Venus.

Renee: It is zero degrees,  minutes away.

Renee: Creativity, sensuality, so connecting to all of your senses.

Renee: Pleasure, play, let's have fun, and relational values are part of your sacred devotion.

Renee: Venus is really offering a way out of this burnout cycle.

Renee: Thank you.

Renee: How can I make sure that I am present in what I am producing, creating, making it playful, making it interesting, making it engaging?

Renee: Rather than just being in really cold, strict production mode, Venus can represent relationships and represent values and principles.

Renee: So now this has been echoed.

Renee: And I talk about that all the time with my readings.

Renee: I need to make a crystal clear and I do.

Renee: I am not telling you what to do.

Renee: I am a channel for stuff for you to think about.

Renee: I have to keep things objective and neutral.

Renee: I care about you.

Renee: I care that you are happy and healthy and covered in support.

Renee: It's all that Venus stuff.

Renee: I am getting fuel from ensuring in a similar, but different way to Christine, that those relationships are so important to keeping my fire lit.

Renee: And in some ways, I am lighting my fire by helping to light other people's torches.

Renee: And then as a result, I am like, oh good, more fire.

Renee: I love that.

Renee: Because that's also what I need to keep going.

Renee: And the healing recommendations are to look to that Venus placement.

Renee: Look to setting appropriate work boundaries, yada yada, we know.

Renee: So that I don't completely scorch myself.

Renee: I had no idea that this was gonna come up.

Renee: When I read the description for Vesta, I thought it sounded cool.

Renee: And then when I read about myself, I went, are you kidding me?

Renee: It's so completely on the nose.

Interpreting Vesta Placements for Christine and Renee

Renee: I wanted to look at a really quick compare and contrast with Christine's placement and my placement.

Renee: If you think back to the definition for Vesta, we had different components.

Renee: One of them being comfort with being alone.

Renee: And I would say for Christine, based on that interpretation, she was probably around like a 2.5 out of 5.

Renee: And for mine, I'm like a 5 out of 5.

Renee: And then for recharging, for Christine, it was about solitude and intentional connection.

Renee: Whereas for me, it's about active achievement that happens to be supplemented by intentional solitude, creativity, and grounding practices.

2026 Vesta Transits

Renee: I'm going to share an overview of what Vesta has been up to so far in 2026, as well as what is on the horizon in hopes that this information will help you with sparking new interests, passions, or renewing your dedication to your soul work.

Renee: Number one, starting the year off, what an auspicious day, 1-1-1, January 11th of 2026, at 3:37 p.m. Eastern, Vesta entered Aquarius.

Renee: This transit symbolized trying new or unusual routines, embracing technology and collaboration, with a potential detachment from emotions.

Renee: And I will note here, it was around this exact time that I started changing my routines in work.

Renee: Next, we had March 10th, at 5:22 p.m. Eastern time.

Renee: And I have to share this anecdote.

Renee: The day that I was originally researching Vesta, it was this day.

Renee: And I said, what are the odds I happened to be researching Vesta, the same day Vesta was changing signs in a handful of hours?

Renee: And I was like, wow, talk about divine timing.

Renee: But starting on March 10th, in the evening, Vesta entered Pisces.

Renee: And this type of a transit signals that intuition and creativity are central to our routines.

Renee: We're embracing emotional healing, and we may find that we get overly sentimental or obsessed with affection.

Renee: This transition happened around some of my most intense experiences in March where I was truly burnt to a crisp.

Renee: And I got incredibly emotionally expressive, and I wanted to just run off and be alone.

Renee: If that isn't Pisces, I don't know what is.

Renee: I was just like, I am so stressed.

Renee: I don't want to talk to anyone.

Renee: I literally said that out loud.

Renee: I was so overwhelmed.

Renee: If Pisces is out of alignment, feeling everything from everybody else, my intuition is on .

Renee: I need to get away.

Renee: I need to escape.

Renee: And that is exactly how I was feeling.

Renee: It was as if a switch flipped right around here.

Renee: And as a recording, I am still in this transit.

Renee: I'm farther along, but I am in it.

Renee: The immediate stressors went away, but I have still felt more easily set off by stuff having to do with work and having to do with my reputation.

Renee: This isn't happening in Aries, which is my needle placement, but it's happening in Pisces.

Renee: And because the ruler of my th house is also in this sign, there's like this connection in this loop of my th house being very, very linked to what my career is, even though it's not a quote career house.

Renee: So yeah, I hope that you fared better.

Renee: At the time of this recording coming out, that chapter will have closed.

Renee: It has not quite for me, but the next chapter, which began in your time just a couple of weeks ago, on May 13th at 12:12 PM Eastern time, Vesta entered Aries.

Renee: So guess what that means for me, Vesta return.

Renee: Vesta in Aries Transit signaled that exercise, following our passions and being challenged should be folded into our routines to really maximize and keep that flame lit.

Renee: It's also really a great time to embrace confidence.

Renee: We're changing our hobbies and our routines.

Renee: Maybe we're getting into fitness.

Renee: Maybe we're discovering something that we're really interested in or getting super, super passionate about it, or we're pushing ourselves, we're challenging ourselves in some way.

Renee: We don't want to go to the extreme because then again, that's the burnout risk I talked about with my needle placement.

Renee: We don't want to go too hard on it, putting way too much effort, way too much energy into that new thing that we are doing, that we then deplete ourselves if we pick challenges that are way too big or we actually pick multiple challenges.

Renee: We got to put some parameters around this so that it's not too much.

Renee: The next one that is upcoming, so none of us have experienced this if you're listening around the time that this episode drops.

Renee: On August 25th at 2:01 PM Eastern Time, it's going to get to 27 degrees, 49 minutes of Aries and station retrograde.

Renee: What does that mean?

Renee: When we have a Vesta retrograde, you may feel tired or just really unsure about what's worth your energy.

Renee: Remember, this is the hearth, this is the flame, this is what's keeping us going, what's keeping us inspired, and what is our self-care.

Renee: How do we take care of myself?

Renee: Apparently, that's what's in store for us.

Renee: Oh gosh, I didn't even look at this.

Renee: It's going to retrograde over my Vesta placement, which means I'll have direct motion, retrograde motion, and then direct motion again for the retrograde cycle.

Renee: I'm definitely going to be feeling this for the whole second half of the year.

Renee: Vesta then stations direct on November 28th at 8:28 a.m.

Renee: Eastern Time when it retrogrades back to 12 degrees, 41 minutes of Aries.

Renee: It's going to have to retrace all of those degree points, plus keep going to actually finish out the sign of Aries, and it will not enter Taurus until February of 2027.

Renee: I'm realizing this now.

Renee: I'm looking at it going, I have no idea what this is going to be like.

Renee: At least you're listening to this and you're already in it and I'm not, so I have no idea what a Vesta return is going to be like, and I'm going to have to have three of them.

Renee: In general, the whole time that you have a natal planet transiting the sign it was in, that is one phase of the return, but then the point that it's going exact is the most intense.
