Introducing Celtic Lore in Practice
Renee: Welcome to Celtic Lore in Practice.
Renee: Make sure to listen to parts one and two before we get started.
Renee: Otherwise, it's like reading the end of a book when you haven't read the beginning or middle.
Renee: Today, we're going to be talking about a lot of different really fun, interesting aspects of Druidic culture.
Renee: I'll lay out some different terms.
Renee: How do we group?
Renee: How do we categorize the different diviners, if you will, the psychics, the intuitives of this culture.
Renee: We'll discuss that framework as well as draw some other connections to the previous two cultures.
Renee: This is my favorite part of this final miniseries, drawing all of these lines to the previous culture.
Renee: There's more of that coming, big tease.
Renee: Then of course, after I break down a few different systems and methods of divination, we'll get to my experimentation phase.
Renee: I already used two different divination tools.
Renee: You will hear about them embedded in this episode.
Renee: You'll have to guess which ones I used.
Renee: If you looked at my social media, you've already been spoiled.
Renee: But I did leave a note in the description, so hopefully you didn't click ahead if you didn't want to know.
Renee: If while you are listening along, you want to see images from the readings that I did for today's episode, call up or buy me a coffee, head over to Instagram or Bluesky where you will see those images.
The Three Paths of Druidry: Bard, Ovate, and Druid
Renee: Now to get into the content, we're going to be talking about the three paths of Druidity.
Renee: The Bard path of Creativity, the Ovate path of Nature, and Druid path of Spirituality.
Renee: I fear that we have gone too many episodes without discussing etymology, so I had pulled some of that info in to break down each of these terms.
Renee: Bard, which is derived from the Celtic, Shucker, Bardo.
Renee: Spelling here, in case you want to get confused, G-W-R-E-D-H-O, meaning he who makes praises or to favor.
Renee: This group is comprised of storytellers, musicians, and it does require study.
Renee: It's not just they're out there playing a tune and having fun.
Renee: And a perfect example as a wonderful tieback, Orpheus, from Greek mythology, was considered a bard and he had given his lyre to the god Apollo.
Renee: Ovates come from the Greek ouateis.
Renee: I did try to look it up and the pronunciation was nowhere to be found.
Renee: But this is how you spell it, O-U-A-T-E-I-S.
Renee: So I'm somewhere in the department.
Renee: And this means soothsayer or prophet.
Renee: These are seers, healers, midwives, also referred to as cunning folk.
Renee: I also have heard this term previously in pop culture called the cunning or cunning people.
Renee: And last but not least, we have Druid from the old Celtic deros, D-E-R-W-O-S, meaning true.
Renee: The root is deru, D-E-R-U, meaning tree, namely the oak tree, the number one, most sacred of all trees.
Renee: And wid, W-I-D, meaning to know or to see.
Renee: Hence, perhaps literally referring to someone who can know the tree or see the truth of the tree.
Renee: These Druids were judges, royal advisors, alchemists, philosophers, inventors, and often had at least years of study within their specialty.
Renee: So I guess historically, if we're looking back at what I might be, if I was in a past life with my current skill set, I would be considered an Ovate.
Renee: And if I had many, many more decades of study, I could become a Druid.
Renee: Done a lot in the music department that's kind of on hold.
Renee: So I had some Bard potential, but I have maybe paused that for a little bit too long.
Renee: I got to pick up my guitar, which has been crying in my closet for quite some time before I can try to reclaim that title.
Renee: Are you surprised by hearing any of these definitions?
Renee: I know that I had heard of Bard, specifically in Harry Potter.
Renee: There was a book called The Beetle and the Bard.
Renee: It was lore actually within that series.
Renee: And then I think Bard comes up in Shakespeare as well.
Renee: And druids are a pretty common term.
Renee: It's one that many, many of us have heard of before, but Ovate was new to me.
The Seven Gifts of Druidry
Renee: So we're going to talk about the seven gifts.
Renee: The first gift is philosophy.
Renee: And it states that nature is sacred and spiritual.
Renee: The second gift is a nature bond.
Renee: We are actively connected with plants and animals.
Renee: The third gift is healing.
Renee: This is about being wellness conscious.
Renee: It's considering food, movement, and sleep.
Renee: Fourth up, we have life as a journey.
Renee: We should expect rites of passage and to experience milestones.
Renee: Other world.
Renee: This gift is about being able to tap into other planes when we meditate or through sacred ritual.
Renee: Number six, we have potential.
Renee: By living through this gift, we are seeking growth and valuing progress through creativity, intuition, and intellect.
Renee: And last but not least, we have magic.
Renee: Can you believe it?
Renee: I was shocked to see it was called magic.
Renee: And this is about the ability to manifest our dreams and be inspired, literally believing in magic, believing that anything could be possible.
Renee: If you dream it, it can be a reality.
Renee: I have to say, I loved these.
Renee: I kind of feel like I need a printout of this somewhere.
Renee: There's so much on here where I recognize, I do have some of these beliefs, but I'm not living them.
Renee: How could I shift?
Renee: How could I pivot?
Renee: I think these are really great reminders.
Renee: Actively checking in with nature, actively being health conscious, making sure that you are doing those things you know you should be doing to take care of yourself.
Renee: There's a lot to draw on in here.
Renee: Every once in a while, it is really great to have this type of reminder.
Renee: If you could pick a top three of the seven that you need to work on, what would they be?
Renee: For me, it would definitely be the healing one.
Renee: Maybe a little bit of magic, honestly.
Renee: I don't have too much by means of a manifestation practice other than with the moon.
Renee: I do at times feel a little bit detached from inspiration when I get bogged down into the happenings of reality.
Renee: I don't know, maybe the nature bond in being outside rather than just admiring nature through a window.
Renee: Speaking of, what a great transition that was totally unplanned.
The Five Elements: Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Spirit
Renee: The next thing I'm going to be talking about are the five elements.
Renee: You may remember in our Feng Shui episode in Season 2, we did talk about elements in Chinese medicine.
Renee: Slight overlap, but of course, as with every culture, there are differences.
Renee: Each of these elements is associated with a cardinal direction, some sort of animal or creature, a solstice or equinox, as well as other keywords and signatures.
Renee: Additionally, they are accompanied by a specific divination practice, if you would like to tap into that element.
Renee: Air, which represents the east, a hawk, as in the bird, spring equinox, knowledge, freedom, and beginnings.
Renee: With air, you can divine via the clouds, which we have talked about in previous cultures.
Renee: For fire, this is connected to the south, stags, aka a deer, the summer solstice, passion, action, and creativity.
Renee: And to connect to this element, you can divine with candles.
Renee: Water, connected to the cardinal direction west, salmon, as in the fish, the autumn equinox, and signatures of emotion, intuition, and ancestors.
Renee: Divine through water cleansing or visualization.
Renee: Next we have earth, which is linked to the north.
Renee: Connected to bears, the winter solstice, grounding, home, and security.
Renee: In order to divine with this element, you can do a literal grounding practice, anything that gets you on the floor, or earthing to connect you to our planet.
Renee: When I was reading about each of those elements, air sounded a lot like Aquarius in particular, because it was knowledge and freedom.
Renee: Fire sounded like a pretty solid combo of the typical fire signs, leaning a little bit heavier into Aries and Leo.
Renee: Water, top to bottom, sounded like cancer.
Renee: Earth was very Taurian sounding to me, maybe a little bit of Virgo going on.
Renee: Spirit, also known as Oryth, spelled N-W-Y-F-R-E.
Renee: This is Welsh, indeed.
Renee: I went to Wales and it was so fascinating to see how they spelled everything because they had so many consonants that are vowel sounds and vice versa and the Y's everywhere.
Renee: So when I saw this immediately, I was like, that is gonna be Welsh, right?
Renee: And I looked it up and it was confirmed.
Renee: This was a term that I did see in a few different books.
Renee: And what it means really is the equivalent of Prana that we talked about with the Yogic tradition, as well as Qi, talked about multiple times in this podcast.
Renee: It is the essence of life.
Renee: The four main elements and then this additional energy that just flows through and connects everything together.
The Three Cauldrons: Goriath, Ernmae, and Sois
Renee: I wanted to talk about this other energy system.
Renee: It's the Three Cauldrons.
Renee: You can consider these chakras almost.
Renee: And they were first cited in this poem called The Cauldron of Poesy by Ommergen.
Renee: Reminder, they love threes.
Renee: So of course, there's three cauldrons.
Renee: I'll give you the spelling just so you know what we're working with here.
Renee: Coire is spelled C-O-I-R-E.
Renee: That is cauldron.
Renee: All three are Coire.
Renee: Insert name here.
Renee: Just to rattle them off quick so you can hear them in a row.
Renee: Coire, Goriath, G-O-R-I-A-T-H.
Renee: Coire, Ernmae, E-R-N-M-A-E.
Renee: And Coire, Shush, or Shosh, depending on your pronunciation.
Renee: Two variants.
Renee: That is spelled S-O-I-S.
Renee: First cauldron, Goriath.
Renee: It is connected to warming and incubation.
Renee: In the body, it's associated with the stomach.
Renee: This cauldron is associated with the sea, the low realm, physical health, the past.
Renee: And it quote, gives wisdom to youth, learning from the past.
Renee: Ancestors, stories, food.
Renee: You learn a lesson from the things that you eat.
Renee: The sea is incredibly old and carries mysteries in its depth.
Renee: For our second cauldron, Ernmae, this is linked to motion and vocation associated with the chest, connected to land or the mid realm, emotional and mental health, the present, and quote, inner growth.
Renee: As you can see here, we are moving up in literal and physical space.
Renee: If before we were talking about the depth of the sea, now we're on land, now we're in our emotional body, movement, feelings, we're connected to the present.
Renee: We're considering that we are ebbing and flowing and we are growing.
Renee: For the third cauldron (Sois), we have Sosh or Shush, and this is inspiration and knowledge linked to the head, connected to the sky or upper realm, spiritual health, the future, and it quote, gives wisdom to poetry and art.
Renee: So now we have moved fully up into the psychic realm, we're connected to the cosmos, higher vibrational energy, thinking above, beyond and outside of ourself.
Renee: We have information, wisdom, inspiration, all coming in and out, flowing and carrying us forward.
Renee: And I do love the connection to the arts and creativity here because is that not where we find flow and spiritual release?
Renee: If you wanted to work with each of these cauldrons, AKA Celtic chakras, concentrate or read into any of these energy centers, seeing what is in balance or out of balance, where you need to add support, maybe connect to those elements, tend to those parts of your body, your being, your spirit.
Ancient Celtic Divination Methods
Renee: I know we talked a little bit about some divination methods, but let's get into the nitty gritty.
Renee: How did the Celts divine?
Renee: How did they connect to their spirituality?
Renee: How did they receive messages from ancestors, their spirit teams, seek to predict the future, seek to receive confirmation from their Celtic gods, etc.
Renee: First step, we have runes.
Renee: I want to make the delineation here that when you look runes up, the most common representation that you will see is Nordic runes.
Renee: They are pieces of stone or wood that have carvings and symbols within them, and specifically for Celtic culture, it would be Ogham, which is their alphabet.
Renee: Next, we have only in a crisis, only in worst-case scenario, human or animal sacrifice.
Renee: As we have established in this culture, they are protectors of nature, of all beings, in order to get to the point of sacrificing any animal, let alone sacrificing any human.
Renee: This is incredibly dire.
Renee: Unlike what we saw with some of the Roman culture, let's bury the vestals under the ground and walk away and pretend it didn't happen.
Renee: That is not the vibe here.
Renee: Content warning, if you want to skip 15 seconds.
Renee: Ways of ending life included drowning, hanging and removing limbs, that one was pretty graphic, or shooting with arrows.
Renee: Once they had said dead body, corpse.
Renee: We have the classic which appeared in all of the other cultures looking at the end trolls.
Renee: Pulling out the intestines, looking at the body, and using that to divine insights.
Renee: Interpreting from clouds, which falls under aeromancy that we discussed back in Roman lore.
Renee: Viewing birds and wildlife, that's augury, we talked about in Roman lore as well.
Renee: Following the flight of the birds, but other wildlife was included.
Renee: It wasn't only about birds, but as we discussed in the part one episode, birds are pretty important to Celtic lore too.
Renee: Then after that, we had astrology.
Renee: They had Celtic astrology, which we have discussed already.
Renee: Plant medicine could be used to enhance any of the above experiences in order to heighten their senses or connect them further to the divine.
Renee: Ancient Druids also built fairy mounds, tree groves, and coves.
Renee: In the last or so years of the era that we have been speaking about, Druids made stone circles.
Renee: You want to picture Stonehenge, but Druids did not build that.
Renee: That was a very, very, very old structure that predated them, but it is a space that they used.
Renee: They're like, oh, how convenient.
Renee: Somebody left all these rocks here.
Renee: Don't mind if we do.
Renee: The purpose and function was for predicting crop cycles.
Renee: So it's about harnessing the land and feeding the people.
Celtic Divination Experimentation with Ogham Runes
Renee: Okay, let's reveal.
Renee: The two practices that I did were ogham runes.
Renee: This was the secret purchase that I mentioned some episodes back.
Renee: I ordered these probably a month and a half before I ended up actually using them.
Renee: I talked a little bit about what runes are physically, literally before, but I wanted to get into a bit of the etymology.
Renee: And the meaning of a rune is secret, magic or charm, which makes sense because it's a little object that carries a divine symbolism and wisdom.
Renee: So you want to unlock that secret likely because it has a symbol on it.
Renee: And if you don't know what the symbol means, it needs to be decoded.
Renee: Vikings were thought to have originated the runic writing system.
Renee: And cultures that used runes typically favored oral tradition and storytelling over the written word.
Renee: And therefore you could see runes carved into buildings.
Renee: As a good example, it's just labeling a house.
Renee: They put this symbol, this is where these people live.
Renee: That symbol means that family.
Renee: It means a word.
Renee: And maybe that word wasn't written out into full letters, but it carries a full narrative almost in that one symbol.
Renee: And typically runes are comprised of just a few straight lines, often intersecting.
Renee: So when I sat down to do this reading, I had absolutely no plan, other than that I would draw some of the runes that I got, channel and reference the little guidebook.
Renee: It's really like two pages, but it has the symbols for all the different Ogham, which reminder are trees, and then a bunch of characteristics and traits associated with them.
Renee: Note, I realized later on, after I had done these readings, that I had chosen and intuited a Mercury Cazimi Day, which is great for wisdom and insight.
Renee: And specifically, it was in Cancer.
Renee: Honestly, it couldn't have been more perfect.
Renee: And it was a pretty straightforward exercise and I ended up doing four rounds of readings, back to back to back.
Renee: And I'm gonna lay all of them out in just a second.
Renee: What I did was I drew the runes and I put them facedown.
Renee: And I realized pretty quickly that when I flipped them over, there was an extra symbol carved into the runes that indicated how the coin, if you will, should be oriented.
Renee: But I was intuitively guided to ignore it for purposes of this reading and just trust the way that I chose to flip it over.
Renee: And if you look close at the images up on social media, you will see the little notch I am talking about.
Renee: I also used my intuition to select which key words from the guidebook to actually write down.
Renee: There were many, many more words than you will hear me citing for each of the trees.
Renee: The overall intention that I channeled for this practice was the word patience.
Renee: Question number one that came through Fast and Furious was what do I need to know about love?
Renee: I drew a single rune, which was the blackthorn.
Renee: And this symbolizes control, obstacles, disharmony and dependence.
Renee: The intuitive message that came through was what's not of service and how to wield my own power.
Renee: In other words, at the point that I'm in my next relationship, that is the lesson I'm learning between now and then and will continue to learn at that point, in order to have love, there needs to be a clarified relationship with control or discomfort not being on the same page, where dependence is healthy and unhealthy.
Renee: And something I have definitely recognized in past relationships, the dynamic with my own personal power.
Renee: So I do see how this makes sense.
Renee: Question number two that came through was where am I going next?
Renee: I pulled another single rune here, which was the Yew, meaning transformation, rebirth and endings.
Renee: I laughed.
Renee: What came in was you knew it.
Renee: They're laughing at me, laughing at them, laughing at the whole scenario.
Renee: And what came next was yes, there's more, as in more transformation, and then expect a shedding.
Renee: We all love a shed every once in a while.
Renee: There's probably going to be something that dissolves and lets go.
Renee: I felt this tension really for most of 2026.
Renee: So I am curious by the time I get to the debrief episode when I've listened back to the whole season, some more months have gone by, what I will have identified as the thing or aspect of my life that experienced that shedding.
Renee: For question number three, what's needed on this journey?
Renee: I was guided to configure five different runes in a cross.
Renee: So you'll see this on social media.
Renee: There's three in a row horizontally and then one above and below the center rune.
Renee: Going from bottom to top, if you're following along with the picture.
Renee: So the question corresponded to the Holly rune, meaning challenges and tests.
Renee: The immediate answer to my question, what's needed on this journey, is challenges and tests.
Renee: Yippee.
Celtic Divination Experimentation with Coire Energy Centers
Renee: The row of three corresponds to the past, present and future, Coire, anybody.
Renee: For the past, I drew Oak, how iconic.
Renee: Oak symbolizes endurance, strength and resilience, leaning on my ability to endure, be resilient, strong, sure-footed.
Renee: In the present, I drew the apple Ogham, which represents wholeness, love, abundance and magic.
Renee: What I just mentioned earlier, off the cuff.
Renee: Hey, I could probably use a little bit more magic.
Renee: The runes agree.
Renee: Finding and embracing love, openness to manifest, be connected to myself, connected to the present.
Renee: Next, we have future, the willow, that is linked to intuition, healing, and feminine, aka divine feminine, which we've talked about now multiple times this season.
Renee: I interpreted this trio as a clear path when I rely on that strength and sure-footedness connect to the earth, but also connect to the cosmos possibility and potential, that it will then activate from root to crown, that higher vibrational energy, flow of the divine feminine and ability to heal myself and others.
Renee: With more ease, which of course is a huge lesson, I'm still sitting working with that I find peace and ease mantra that I mentioned forever ago.
Renee: Seems like it's going to be one that I'm keeping for quite some time.
Renee: Lastly, the top room you'll see in the image, the action at which point I had selected an additional apple.
Renee: This is where we get into that intuition rule at the beginning.
Renee: The action that should be taken is regeneration, magic again, and the divine.
Renee: So while I am staying in the present moment with my apple, I'm also taking action to combat the challenges and tests that arise through the same apple energy.
Renee: Being able to regenerate, that's resilience I get from the oak in the past, magic which I get from the apple in the present, and divine which you could also say connects to that divine and healing intuition of the future.
Renee: The action is drawing from the past, present and the future.
Renee: Blended together, time is a circle.
Mini Psychic Reading Forecast with the Coire
Renee: Next up was the surprise little mini-forecast.
Renee: This was specifically targeted around September 14th.
Renee: And I do know from after the fact, when I looked at the schedule, that this episode will be releasing definitely within a week after that date.
Renee: I drew two different runes.
Renee: The first one, representing truth, which was the birch, signals new beginnings, vitality and growth.
Renee: In other words, our truth.
Renee: During this time, we are connecting to our own vitality and we are seeking growth and improvement.
Renee: The second rune was for lies.
Renee: And I drew the pine, which represents discretion, objectivity and the big picture.
Renee: The channeled message that came in is trust what's true.
Renee: Don't get hung up on the lies.
Renee: In other words, hyperfixation on discretion or being really, really objective or having to look at the big picture and the pressure and the weight of that.
Renee: Because those lies only act as blocks to your ascension in this next era.
Renee: The next era is the new beginning.
Renee: The truth is we have a new beginning.
Renee: Something is plowing forward, something is starting anew.
Renee: And yes, it can be nice to think about what this means for the arc of history or society or for you as an individual.
Renee: If we are focused on discretion, if we're focused on objectivity, if we're trying to needle into something, and maybe there's people that are telling us this is what they think this means.
Renee: Painting our reality as objective, oh, this is how things are, this is what's happening, this is what this means.
Renee: What we should be trusting is the truth.
Renee: What is true is that there is a new beginning that is happening, our own vitality and the vitality of earth, plants, animals, et cetera, to be focused on, and the importance of growth in the long term, in that new era.
Renee: Please do write in, I can't wait to listen to this and find out what on earth is going on right now.
Renee: For the second reading, we are back to the Coire, aka the Cauldrons.
Renee: I used my Moonchild Tarot deck to draw one card for each cauldron.
Renee: For the Coire Goriath, as a refresher of the past and physical health, I drew the Page of Wands.
Renee: Per the Guidebook, I was instructed to share the following passage, quote, We must not forget to nurture and treasure this innocent freedom and lust for life.
Renee: The Page of Wands has not yet been influenced by the stress and chaos of the outside world, which allows them to fully savor and appreciate each day.
Renee: What this means is that we're thinking of our youth, of memories as precious, and leveraging our physical bodies within this moment to pursue inspiration, activation, and pure joy.
Renee: As I am sharing all of this with you, I am fully processing how this relates to the other reading.
Renee: As far as behind the scenes go, I did these readings very far apart.
Renee: I'm reading the notes here and I didn't realize there was such a strong connection of what came through for the collective.
Renee: For the Coire Ernmae, which is the second cauldron, related to the present and emotional and mental health, I drew the five of swords.
Renee: Defeat after conflict, letting go of what's harming us.
Renee: Another messaging that came through is that we can get present and ask ourselves some questions, many that came through, including what no longer makes sense in my life.
Renee: Number two, where am I acting as my own worst enemy?
Renee: And then the third question came from the guidebook, which is, how are my actions affecting the world around me?
Renee: Ultimately, we are being encouraged to process our emotions and navigate the wave of our mental health by addressing these questions.
Renee: And that brings us to our last Coire, Shosh or Shush, which is connected to the future and spiritual health.
Renee: For this one, I drew the Shadow Work card.
Renee: This is not actually in the Major Arcana.
Renee: It is a bonus card within the Moonchild Tarot Deck.
Renee: This goes beyond all those journal prompts that we received for the Second Cauldron.
Renee: This one feels visceral, as though we are jolted and have some sort of a whiplash because it's an abrupt shakeup and turn of events happening.
Renee: The guidebook talks a lot about release, which we discussed under number two.
Renee: Letting go of what's not serving us.
Renee: And specifically for this Shadow Work, it's the action.
Renee: There is a burden that we are carrying.
Renee: There's a mask that we are wearing.
Renee: We are taking those off.
Renee: We're putting them down.
Renee: That is a choice decision.
Renee: And we're also choosing to connect to our soul truth and integrity.
Renee: And the action is, quote, where we need to make some profound changes in our life.
Renee: To back it up, Coire number one, we're thinking about the memories, we're thinking about youth and joy and appreciation, trying to bring ourselves into the present, while remaining connected compassionately to the past.
Renee: Then we are asking ourselves what we could think about in a different way, and then setting ourselves up for informing the actions that we should take.
Renee: Coire number three, we take the big steps to do the releasing work and have that new change.
Renee: And if we want to circle back to the other collective reading that I had for the Ogham Runes, that was that new beginning.
Renee: We're taking steps, we're letting go of the things that are holding us back, the frameworks, we're clear on what our truth is, and we are leaning in to our own progress and making it happen so that we can live more fully.
Closing Thoughts & Housekeeping
Renee: Please let me know what you thought of all these readings.
Renee: I didn't know it was going to be doing so many.
Renee: A nice little bonus to have these extra readings come in.
Renee: Apparently we're going to need it because I will still have my regular Behind the Scenes, A Life Update Collective Readings episode in the feed soon.
Renee: Quick housekeeping note, the next episode you'll hear in your feed is Book Club.
Renee: For Soul Rising, we are going to be reading chapters 27 through 29.
Renee: After this one, we're just going to have one more section.
Renee: Then the book will be over.
Renee: I hope you have caught up on your reading and that you've been enjoying this book as much as I have.
Renee: Hilariously, I have a closing quote from a book that I read to prepare for this series.
Renee: I wrote this down before I even knew what I was going to talk about in this episode.
Renee: I am laughing because it works perfectly with everything that I just explained.
Renee: Celtic Mysticism by Tracie Long.
Renee: Definitely recommend this book.
Renee: I loved this one.
Renee: The quote is as follows: "go forth and be abundant in spirit, in wisdom, and in magic."
Renee: 10 out of 10 because how many times are we talking about magic in this episode?
Christine: Thanks for listening.
Christine: If you'd like to learn more, the resources we used to prepare for this episode are listed in the show notes.

Outro
Renee: Hi, I'm recording.
Renee: I had to start late because I was busy and had extra meetings.
Renee: I'm like most of the way done, so just FYI.
Renee: Did you say something?
Renee: I heard a squeak.
Renee: I thought it was you.
